BTS-PTS-04 WORLD HERITAGE SITES OF DELHI IN PROMOTION OF TOURISM
According to the World Heritage Centre of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the total number of World Heritage Sites (WHSs) has risen
steadily. Thus, these growing trends appear to suggest that, if the positive effect of WHSs on
international tourism is proved, having such sites will lead to increases in international tourist
arrivals and consequently tourism expenditure, thereby benefiting the economies of the
destination countries.
April 18 is being observed as World Heritage Day. Marked by United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a specialised agency of UN, the day concerns
all the international sites of historical significance, apart from the sites recognised by UNESO as
‘heritage site’.
At present, India has 32 world heritage sites of which 25 sites are of cultural importance and 7
are of natural importance, as recognised by UN.
